The honest question is not “build or buy.” It is “where is the operation unique, and where is it standard?” Unique work belongs in software you own. Standard work belongs in a product with a durable API. The rest is integration.
Build when the process is the business
If the way you take work, price it, produce it, or serve it is how you compete, forcing that process into a generic ERP or CRM will cost more than engineering. You will pay in workarounds, shadow spreadsheets, and staff who invent parallel systems.
Integrate when a system of record already exists
Do not rewrite accounting because intake is clumsy. Connect intake to accounting with a contract: which object is canonical, how conflicts resolve, what happens when a side is down. Integration is architecture, not a nightly CSV.
A disciplined path either way
MHM’s software path—discover, analyze, architect, prototype, engineer, integrate, test, deploy, support, scale—exists so custom work does not become an unmaintainable exception. The same path, shortened, applies when the answer is “buy this, wrap it, and connect it.”
